Need MAC Help for Alternate Characters

Mac OSX problem: why is it that, when I'm in a word processing or text editing program, the "alternate" characters no longer show up when I press the option key? Like, option-g should pull up a copyright symbol, but it doesn't. I have to go in to some stupid "palette" menu and manually find the symbols.

It didn't used to do this. What'd I mess up, and how can I fix it?
