I write like...

I visited the currently "trending" I Write Like web site this morning to find out who I write like. A selection from a group story at a toy web site at which I participate yielded this power player result:

I write like
Margaret Mitchell

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

An excerpt from my last ill-fated NaNoWriMo effort apparently resembles the prolific prose of this noted wordsmith:

I write like
Stephen King

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

Interestingly, a sample from an online response I posted recently on Alan Henry's Gears & Widgets blog resulted in three different analyses out of six, depending on which paragraphs I selected. The most common result, and the one which resulted from pasting in the entire document, was:

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

(Uhm... I don't even know who this guy is. It's google time!)

My favorite response -- and I do see the similarity here, is based on a selection culled from entries in my much neglected travel blog:

I write like
Douglas Adams

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

I got David Foster Wallace for two history essays. For everything else (I mean, like, five pieces: "creative non-fiction", florid rambly e-mails, journal entries, etc.) I got H.P. Lovecraft. Wait, what?

H.P. Lovecraft?! That is soooo cool! That's even better than Douglas Adams! And your results were consistent, too!

I'm impressed. And envious.

I *always* saw the resemblance to Douglas Adams in your writing, though. Just sayin'.

I suspect the "Adams" result was due to my use of the word "whilst" in the submitted sample.

You have a good varied writing style.

Thank you! That's a polite, diplomatic way to say "scattered and inconsistent."

It's not inconsistent.
You use a different style for different purposes.
