No School on Friday Due to Possibility of Mussed Up Hair

The Hawaii State Department of Human Resources Development has granted Administrative Leave for Inclement Weather on January 16, 2009 for all state employees except for Civil Defense Coordinators, Disaster Response Workers, and Essential Workers, thus DOE State Office and District Office employees SHOULD NOT report to work on Friday, January 16, 2009.

All public schools on Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and Lanai will be closed on Friday, January 16, 2009.

Because, you know...

Friday: Occasional showers, mainly after noon. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 75. Breezy, with a west wind around 25 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph.

As I was driving home from work this evening around 6:00 p.m., announcements on the radio were claiming winds in Wahiawa (a town through which I drive on the way home) were at 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph. I was listening to this as I passed Lake Wilson. The surface of the lake... was glassy smooth. Nary a ripple.

So, yeah. Predicted sustained winds of 25 miles per hour warrant shutting down the entire state (and city/county) infrastructure.

What would happen if we had a real storm?

Oh, wait. We had a real storm a few weeks ago. That would be where I was driving to work through axle-deep water, around rockslides and fallen trees. Half the island underwater after 48 hours of continuous downpours, no big deal, come on in to work. But a prediction of "gusty winds," ooooh! Danger!
