Fun With Rocketry

SUPPLIES: one of those plastic cannisters that 35mm film comes in. It has to be one of the transparenty ones from Fuji with a cap that snaps tightly into place. You'll also need a packet of fizzy Alka-Selter™ (or cheap generic equivalent) tablets.

  1. Take one of the Alka-Seltzer™ (or cheap generic equivalent) tablets and break it in half. Easier said than done. Approximately in half will do.

  2. Fill the container about one-third full of water.

  3. Drop the partial tablet into the container.

  4. AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE snap the lid onto the film cannister.

  5. Set the film cannister lid-end-down on a flat surface and step back.

  6. Wait for between five and thirty seconds.

  7. POP! The film cannister rocket should shoot ten to fifteen feet into the air. Maybe more.

Much less expensive than Diet Coke and Mentos, and almost as much fun!

And it's a lot less sticky and dirty to clean up afterward.

For better effect you could stick the tablet to the lid with some water-soluble glue (starch?) so you can carfylly put the lid on without bringing the 'fuel components'into contact. That way you can prepare several rockets'in advance.
Just a good shake and slapping them down will 'ignite' the engine.
To make things tracable you can add a bit of ink to the water (only for out-door experiments)
